A Regretful Friendship

“ Wen Han, you shall leave the exam hall now!” The furious invigilator shouted. Tears welled up in my eyes as I walked out the examination hall with depressed steps. I took a peep at Jeremy. With great shock, he revealed a cunning smile to me. How could he do that? Aren’t we good friends? Countless question marks filled up my mind on the day of SPM.

Jeremy and I were inseparable friends from an early age. Hailing from a family which was living from hand to mouth, my parents were struggling to make ends meet. My parents could ill-afford to provide me an university education. On the contrary, Jeremy was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He had no worry to his life. Despite the great differences, we were able to make friends with each other. For me, he was quite a benign and trustworthy friend that I had never met.

“ There were still one month and the Form 5 students have to sit for the SPM examination. Do knuckle down to hard work from now on!” the principal announced. The stern advice marked that the SPM was around the corner. Being aware of the importance of the examination, I was bent on achieving resounding results. It was my dream; to become a doctor and provide my parents with good lives when I grow up.

From that day, I swotted away at home everyday. “ Rome was not built in one day” This was what I believed. The mounting revisionary books did not dampen my spirit to work harder in order to materialize my dream. “ Hey, friend. Why don’t you take it easy? Let’s go to have a ball of time at the cyber café.” Jeremy seemed to be quite relaxed. He showed no sign of anxiety at all. With great worry for him, I tried to reason with him that he should cut down some time on entertainment and put more effort in preparing the examination. “You are putting your future in jeopardy!” Nonetheless, my sincere advice was unheeded.

After having a strenuous month, it was the Red Letter Day. I had to sit for the History paper which was the most dreaded subjects of all for me. Before entering the examination hall, I was struggling to memorize important facts from the History book. Everybody just seemed to be as panicky as I except for Jeremy. He was standing adjacent to me, whistling and teasing other friends. “Well-equipped huh? You look so confident,” I blurted. “. “Everything will work out just fine, no worries!” he brushed me off.

Feeling edgy, I entered the exam hall. Jeremy sat calmly beside me. My hands were icy cold as I received the test paper from the invigilator. Soon, everybody was busy answering the papers. The exam hall was loomed with great silence. It all happened when I got stuck in a difficult question. I saw Jeremy taking out a piece of paper from his pocket and copy something from it. He was cheating! Without further ado, I quickly whispered to him so to keep the paper for he had infringed the rules.

Abruptly, there was a gust of wind and the paper was blown to the floor in front of the invigilator. “Whose paper is this?” asked the invigilator in an infuriated voice. Sweat kept oozing out from his forehead. Should I tell the invigilator? Or I should keep the secret? When I was between angle and devil, Jeremy stood up. “It was Wen Han who cheated. I had advised him not to do so but he turned a deaf ear to me.” My heart sank. All my dream went up in smoke at the moment. “ For you had broken the exam rules, you are asked to leave the exam hall now!” I endeavoured to explain to the invigilator but to no avail.

I was reprimanded in front of all the candidates. The cunning smile he showed to me indicated that our friendship was irreconcilable. He was not the Jeremy that I knew. Since that day, I never met him. I wondered if I could forgive him. Let God make the decision.

Recently, I heard news regarding him; he had joined a notorious gang.

One day, I was stunned into immobility as I saw Jeremy face in the newspaper. “ Daring robbers were shot dead in a gun-fight with policemen…”
